Here in North Idaho, it can take a little work to achieve indoor/outdoor living. As fall approaches, I like to look for ways to extend the “backyard” season. The trick is to make it warm and cozy – that way you’ll get maximum use before the snow flies! Here are a few tips to achieve a hygge backyard you’ll love to use:
Tip 1: Cozy Warmth
As the weather cools, we naturally gravitate to thicker textiles. This is a great time to add blankets, throws and rugs to your backyard. Nothing is cozier than curling up with a blanket under the stars! Nice fluffy cushions help insulate from the chill, too. PRO TIP: Wicker is always on-trend; add a touch of it to your backyard with a large basket full of rolled throws. Functional decor at its finest!
Tip 2: Add in Fire
If you don’t already have a fire pit in your backyard, it’s a great time to add one! It’s easier than ever with freestanding options, or you can install something permanent. And make sure you have the wood piled up! PRO TIP: If you can’t have real fire, you can still get the cozy feeling with a cluster of battery lanterns. Just put them at different levels to make a unique grouping. High fashion and safe!
Tip 3: Bring in the Color
Fall is a great time to swap out cushion covers, put out richly colored ottomans and add in some vibrant potted mums. Look for rich colors – reds and rusts, oranges and yellows, and stunning blues and greens. The changing colors in nature provide a great backdrop, and richer colors feel extra cozy this time of year! PRO TIP: It’s also a great time of year to bump up with texture! Think furry pillows, shaggy rugs and bumpy rattan and jute. Texture is another great hygge element that you will love this time of year.
BONUS TIP: Don’t forget bistro and fairy lights! As the sun sets earlier, these strings of little lights will create so much atmosphere and give the effect of a lower ceiling. So cozy!
