Something I’ve noticed so many professional designers do is add leaner mirrors. It’s such a cool design element! Sometimes called floor mirrors, you can utilize these large-scale pieces in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms and even hallways and bathrooms. I’ve been hunting for one for my living room for months – I’ll find the right one at some point! Here are a few tips for using leaner mirrors in your decor:
Tip 1: Architectural Interest
Large leaner mirrors come in a myriad of varieties, and can add a much-needed architectural element. Depending on the one you choose, they can look like a doorway to another room or give the impression of decorative molding. PRO TIP: Generally speaking, the bigger the better! If your budget won’t cover the heavily ornate or super size version, consider adding an extra band of molding around an existing mirror, or adding decorative trim for extra oomph.
Tip 2: Reflection is Everything
When you are choosing a place for your mirror, consider what it will reflect. You can position it to visually enlarge a room, or reflect a favorite vignette. They can also be placed to maximize natural light – a handy feature in a dim room! PRO TIP: A great look is to place the mirror partially behind small pieces of furniture, or side lamps. Designers often utilize this technique to make small groupings of a chair and a small table. Give it a try and you’ll look like a pro!
Tip 3: Layering
For extra texture and interest, consider layering your leaner mirror with other mirrors or art pieces. The result can be very chic, and really adds a lot to a room. To make this look work, hunt for pieces of different sizes and textures that have a unifying element like shape, color or texture. PRO TIP: If you have the space and budget, you can double up your mirrors with two side by side for extra drama.
BONUS TIP: Leaner mirrors can be a great use of “dead space” in corners or awkward nooks. They also make great display area for wreaths and garlands at Christmas!
