I always read about the new trends, and the trends that are fading, but there isn’t always a lot of information out there about timelessness. Trends don’t last, and most of us (certainly those of us avoiding Fast Furniture!) don’t want to be redecorating annually. Trends are fun, but when I see things like Gigi Hadid decorating her kitchen with colored pasta, I have to wonder how long that will last. (And I’m pretty sure the current Pinterest darling of gluing popsicle sticks to things won’t have much staying power, either). I think there will always be trends, but the trick is learning which ones you love enough to live with long-term. Here are my five recommendations for timeless decor pieces that will be on trend for years to come.
Timeless Trend #1: White or Cream Drapes
Basic, good quality white or cream drapes just last. They will go with any decor style and always make windows look taller. Make sure they either just brush the floor or pool slightly on the floor and you’ll be golden.
Timeless Trend #2: Black Furniture
I had a friend in college who augmented her family’s income by upcycling furniture. She told me if she painted it black, it would sell. I find that other colors fade in and out, but like a Little Black Dress, black is always timeless and works with any decor style.
Timeless Trend #3: Muted Persian Rugs
A soft, subtle Persian rug lasts forever and fits anywhere. I love quality rugs, and it’s worth it to find one that you can use for years. You can even move them room to room!
Timeless Trend #4: Think Interchangeable
A great way to ensure your decor pieces can stand the test of time is to make sure there are interchangeable options. For example, potted plants. If you keep them in plastic grower’s pots, you can drop them into a myriad of containers that will fit different decor styles. Ditto with pillows; always buy really good quality pillow inserts, then you can change the covers to suit different styles.
Timeless Trend #5: Buy Quality Just like I touched on recently in my blog post about Fast Furniture, it’s worth buying quality. Well made furniture lasts, and not just because it’s sturdy; it’s solid in style, too. A good quality couch, for instance, won’t have a trendy shape that you’ll hate in 6 months.
