Finding storage options is hard enough, and finding attractive ones is harder still! And so few houses have spare storage areas (mine certainly doesn’t!). You get the obligatory hall closet, a pantry, and – with luck – an entry closet. It’s just not enough when storage is such a necessary part of life. Here are my strategies for avoiding stressful clutter and finding attractive storage options:
Tip 1: Hide It
If storage space is an issue, look for furniture pieces that have storage already built in: ottomans and benches with lids, coffee tables with baskets underneath and television cabinets with drawers and doors. PRO TIP: A great way to bring in extra storage on the sly is using furniture outside of it’s usual purpose. Dressers, hutches and buffets are great for this. I put my television on a vintage dresser, and I’m amazed at how much space it provides without looking like “storage.”
Tip 2: Use it as an Accent
Storage pieces can be a great way to bring much-needed texture and interest to a room. Wicker, rattan and wood pieces can really add to your decor while providing excellent options for blankets, games and off-season decor. PRO TIP: If you are really strapped for space, think vertical! A row of fun boxes on top of a bookshelf looks like decor, but can hold a lot of items.
Tip 3: Celebrate It
Sometimes the best storage options are the unique pieces that attract attention! Lockers, unusually pained armories or fun vintage cabinets are great options. PRO TIP: Think outside the box! It’s amazing what can double as storage with a little imagination. I once saw a gutted piano double as a blanket chest – the sky really is the limit!
Bonus Tip: Don’t forget faux built-ins! It’s amazing what a few pieces of trim over inexpensive shelving units will do for a room. There are so many attractive storage options – don’t settle for clutter!
