Halloween is that time of year when the world seems to transform into a spooky wonderland. For many, it’s an opportunity to embrace their inner ghoul or witch and dive headfirst into the world of cobwebs, pumpkins, and eerie decorations. However, what if Halloween isn’t your thing? What if you’re not a fan of the scary and the macabre, or you simply lack enthusiasm for non-Christmas holiday displays? Don’t worry; you can still add a touch of Halloween spirit to your home without going all-out. Here are a few tricks for Halloween décor (even if it just isn’t your thing):
Trick 1: Embrace the Cozy Fall Aesthetic
If you’re not into the creepy and spooky side of Halloween, focus on the warm and cozy aspects of the season instead. Decorate with fall-inspired items like pumpkins, gourds, and colorful leaves. You can create a welcoming and seasonal atmosphere with a beautiful wreath of autumn foliage on your front door. This way, you’ll still be participating in the holiday spirit without resorting to the macabre. PRO TIP: If you do opt for a Jack o’lantern style pumpkin, you can turn the face away for the rest of fall!
Trick 2: Rustic and Vintage Decor
Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the plastic skeletons and fake spiders. If that’s not your style, consider opting for rustic or vintage decorations. Items like old lanterns, wooden crates, and mason jars filled with dried flowers can give your space a more classic, charming feel that fits the season without relying on horror elements. PRO TIP: Go DIY! Get creative with projects that align with your personal style, like painting pumpkins with elegant designs or patterns instead of scary faces. These crafts can be an enjoyable way to embrace the season without delving into the frightening.
Trick 3: Neutral Color Scheme
Black and orange may be common elements, but if they aren’t your colors stick with a more neutral palette. Consider decorating with white, gray, or beige pumpkins and natural materials like burlap and twine. This can help you create a serene and sophisticated Halloween ambiance that aligns with your design preferences. PRO TIP: Play up the traditional themes that DO fit your style (like white ghosts or black candlesticks) and recolor standard items to fit your aesthetic (like white pumpkins instead of orange). Or go with a whole new palatte in your favorite colors!
BONUS TIP: Celebrate the parts of the holiday that appeal to you, and skip the rest. You can go cultural with Dia de los Muertos, or focus on a favorite memory like Casper the Friendly Ghost. For me, I like nod to the holiday with a small Edgar Allan Poe-themed display. You do you!
