Because Thanksgiving and Christmas are close together, it’s easy to go overboard on Thanksgiving and have a hard time transitioning to holiday merriment… or just let red and green glitter overshadow your turkey. Consider this instead – ThankMas décor! Look for things that feel totally Thanksgiving but feel very Christmas as soon as the turkey is gone. Here are my top three Tips to embrace ThankMas and make decorating easy this year!
Tip #1: Go for the Gold
Strong metallic hues of gold, bronze and brass are easy backbones of both Thanksgiving and Christmas décor. Play these up throughout your displays with trays, candleholders, and figurines that are a nod to the season through color but not expected themes for either. Think pheasants instead of turkeys, bunnies instead of reindeer. Golds are a great way to bridge the holidays! PRO TIP: An easy way to bump up your gold tones is with a spritz of spray paint on your risers. I especially like upside-down wicker baskets and inexpensive thrifted books sprayed with a wash of old gold.
Tip #2: Think Green
Greenery is an essential element in both Thanksgiving and Christmas décor. Make your greenery work for both by blending soft eucalyptus leaves with traditional holiday pine. The two together are stunning, and both will hold beautifully. As the eucalyptus dries it takes on a lovely, wrinkled texture – so fun for every season! PRO TIP: As a former florist, one of my favorite holiday greens is magnolia leaves. They are glossy green on one side and brown velvet on the other, making them the perfect transitional option.
Tip #3: Bump up the Hygge
When decorating with both holidays in mind, it helps to create a cozy baseline of warm, soft elements that work all winter season. Swapping out pillows, throws, table linens and even rugs with cozy options in neutral colors gives you a solid foundation to work from as the seasons change. PRO TIP: Don’t forget lights and scents! Pretty scented candles (you can swap out the scents!) cast a beautiful glow, and fairy lights always give a cozy ambiance. Another tip I learned from an interior designer is to swap white lampshades for cream in the winter – the glow completely alters the room.
BONUS TIP: Forge your own path! If you opt for a color palette that is non-traditional for either holiday, and build from that, your décor will always be unique and bridge both seasons. Adding in sparkle ensures a holiday feel no matter the colors. You can try blues and whites for timeless winter tones, or go bold with bright purple with lime accents. Either would be beautiful!
